Honda CR-V RD, 1 generation 10.1995 - 11.1998

1 generation
(RD) 10.1995 - 11.1998
E-RD1
1 generation
SUV
The first-generation Honda CR-V was created as an “urban” jeep and special attention was paid to its practicality. Not surprisingly, there are two decipherments of the name: “Compact Recreational Vehicle”, which can be translated as “compact car for rest” and “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle”, which means “comfortable car for traveling”. Both names are equally relevant - with small external dimensions, the CR-V has a roomy interior space that allows passengers to move freely inside the cabin. This car, of course, is not intended for driving on "serious" off-road, but, having not very large dimensions, has high safety and reliability, and its ability to move on all types of roads is higher than that of a conventional sedan, which, of course, was appreciated first generation buyers.
The car is quite well equipped for its time, especially with regard to various elements designed to provide proper comfort. CR-V has a spacious, practical and well-designed interior with comfortable seats, lots of containers and pockets for storing various items, including a box under the front passenger seat. The second row of seats folds, frees up additional cargo space, while forming a perfectly flat floor. The main difference in trim levels in terms of interior and exterior comes down to additional elements: wood-like interior trim, leather steering wheel braid, roof rails, fog lights, remote control, 15 ”alloy wheels. Since 1996, the car has acquired ABS, airbags, glazed with UV protection. Especially popular was the equipment with a satellite navigation system. As a result of the 1998 restyling, the car underwent minor changes aimed at improving the appearance and interior.

The first generation of this car was equipped according to the principle: 2-liter inline 4-cylinder DOHC engine (130 l. s.) + 4WD + 4-speed automatic transmission. A little later, a 5-speed manual gearbox was added. In addition, as a result of a number of changes in 1998, engine power increased by 20 hp, less expensive front-wheel drive CR-V variants were offered. As for the B20B engine, this is one of the most reliable engines of the company, thanks to which even the first copies of the right-hand drive Honda CR-V are still in service and are in good technical condition. Unlike most wagons common in those years with improved cross-country ability, the CR-V has a rather complicated suspension. Double wishbone design in front and multi-link rear. Despite the fact that the main purpose of this car is still hard coatings, it has a pretty decent ground clearance and a flat bottom, which contributes to cross-country ability: it can easily make a sortie to nature. A camouflaged picnic table disguised as a spare compartment cover became an original feature of the model.

The safety of the driver and passengers is ensured by two airbags, reinforcing elements of the frame and doors. Some versions suggested the presence of seat belt pretensioners, TCS traction control system, course stabilization system (since 1998). The generation has repeatedly participated in crash tests using the IIHS, NHTSA, Australian NCAP methods, where depending on the complexity of the tests it received ratings from “satisfactory” to “excellent”. It has become very popular in the United States, where there has long been a rigorous approach to assessing the safety of vehicles designed for the North American market.

Honda CR-V is a car that is practically devoid of any noticeable shortcomings, except for some nuances (for example, difficulties with towing an idle car, lack of good sound insulation and sensitivity to strong crosswind - a fee for a high body). However, in everything else, the pluses prevail: adequate price for used cars, four-wheel drive, high efficiency, ease of maintenance, practical interior. In our country, the high popularity of the first-generation right-hand drive CR-V has largely ensured the success of the following generations of this model.
