The fifth-generation Mazda Capella sedan began production in 1987, replacing the previous generation, which has been produced for five years. In the new version of the car, the design was greatly changed, there were changes under the hood. The new Mazda Capella sedan received a more streamlined body shape, made with the expectation of improved aerodynamics. The car lost the angularity inherent in the previous generation. Changed the appearance of the headlights, bumpers and grille. But a particularly notable change in the design of the Capella was the return of side mirrors from the front fenders to the car door, making it easier for the driver to observe the road behind him. The first attempts to do this were made in the previous generation for the hatchback. All subsequent generations of Mazda Capella were produced only with mirrors on the doors. The Mazda Capella sedan was created on the GD platform. The production of right-hand drive cars for the Japanese market started in 1989. Then the list of available bodies was expanded: five-door hatchbacks, coupes and station wagons (which were created on the GV platform) appeared. In the European and American markets, Capella cars were called Mazda 626.
In 1990, facelift took place. Serial production of the Mazda Capella sedan was stopped in July 1994, giving way to the next generation, which was represented by only one type of body - the sedan. Individual modifications to the fifth-generation station wagon continued to be produced later.
The length of the car compared to the previous generation decreased to 4515 mm. The width of the sedan remained unchanged (1690 mm), and the height was reduced to 1395 mm. The height of the ground clearance in different versions differs: 150 or 165 mm.
