The fifth-generation Mazda Capella sedan began production in 1987, replacing the previous generation, which has been produced for five years. In the new version of the car, the design was greatly changed, there were changes under the hood. The new Mazda Capella sedan received a more streamlined body shape, made with the expectation of improved aerodynamics. The car lost the angularity inherent in the previous generation. Changed the appearance of the headlights, bumpers and grille. But a particularly notable change in the design of the Capella was the return of side mirrors from the front fenders to the car door, making it easier for the driver to observe the road behind him. The first attempts to do this were made in the previous generation for the hatchback. All subsequent generations of Mazda Capella were produced only with mirrors on the doors. The Mazda Capella sedan was created on the GD platform. The production of right-hand drive cars for the Japanese market started in 1989. Then the list of available bodies was expanded: five-door hatchbacks, coupes and station wagons (which were created on the GV platform) appeared. In the European and American markets, Capella cars were called Mazda 626.

In 1990, facelift took place. Serial production of the Mazda Capella sedan was stopped in July 1994, giving way to the next generation, which was represented by only one type of body - the sedan. Individual modifications to the fifth-generation station wagon continued to be produced later.

The length of the car compared to the previous generation decreased to 4515 mm. The width of the sedan remained unchanged (1690 mm), and the height was reduced to 1395 mm. Such dimensions provide a comfortable fit in the cabin at once five people. The wheelbase of the Mazda Capella sedan has grown to 2575 mm. The height of the ground clearance in different versions differs: 150 or 165 mm. The sedan was produced with gasoline and diesel engines, which were also offered on cars of the previous generation: 1.6 liters, 1.8 liters and 2.0 liters. Fuel consumption in the mode of 60 km / h per 100 kilometers was 3.9 - 5.0 liters, depending on the power and volume of the engine, and diesel engines did not consume more than 4 liters. In the combined cycle, the fuel consumption on gasoline modifications was 7.1 - 10.2 liters. The fuel tank capacity is 60 liters.

A four-speed automatic and mechanical gearbox, as well as a five-speed manual transmission, were installed on the Mazda Capella sedan. Cars were produced with front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The latter was installed only in combination with 1.8 and 2.0 liter gasoline engines.

On the Mazda Capella, a fourth-generation sedan installed ventilated disc brakes in front and drum rear. The car's suspension is a suspension strut, which is supplemented with a stabilizer in front. In most trim levels, the stabilizer was also installed at the rear.

Mazda Capella sedan was available in three trim levels: Profile, SG and Celebre. In the basic version, the car had the following options: power steering, steering wheel height adjustment, power windows, tachometer, central locking, electric side mirrors, radio and cassette player. All versions immediately installed anti-lock braking system (ABS). As options, leather steering wheel braid, climate control, child seat mounts and a three-point seat belt, available in the Celebre luxury package, were offered.
In 1987, sales of the fourth generation Mazda Capella started. A car was produced in four body styles: a new station wagon was added to the traditional hatchback, sedan and coupe. Its release in 1988 began on the new GV platform, while the rest of the bodies were produced on the GD platform. The car was called Capella Cargo.
The Mazda Capella wagon had a similar front design, but received unique taillights. The Mazda Capella station wagon was distinguished by two features: a roof rising in the middle and a seven-seater saloon available on individual modifications, which at that time was a rarity, and today seven-seater cars are produced mainly in minivan or SUV bodies. Five-seater versions featured a large boot volume. For the transportation of oversized cargo rails were provided. The rear window has a curved shape to increase visibility. The car was recognized as the best station wagon of the time.

In 1994, the release of a new generation of sedan began. At the same time, they decided to modernize the station wagon. As a result, the updated Mazda Capella station wagon was called the Capella Wagon. The design of the front of the station wagon, which was borrowed from the sedan, has changed. The roof of the car became flat, as in other versions of the body. In 1996, the Mazda Capella station wagon received a new front bumper with already integrated fog lights. Production of this generation wagon lasted until 1997.

Initially, only 1.8 liter (97 hp) gasoline engines were installed on the Mazda Capella station wagon, which were discontinued in 1992. In 1990, two-liter engines with a capacity of 82, 145 and 150 horsepower were presented. Two years later, two-liter engines with 115 hp became available. In 1996, the last update of the engine line occurred: two-liter engines were added, developing 88 and 165 hp.

Combined fuel consumption for diesel versions of the station wagon is 3.9 - 5.0 liters. Gasoline modifications consume 7.6 - 10.5 liters of fuel. The capacity of the fuel tank is 60 liters.

Universal Mazda Capella is equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission or five-speed manual. Modifications were produced with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Car suspension - suspension struts with stabilizers. In some versions the limited slip differential is available. Auto - disc brakes (ventilated front mounted).

Different versions of the Mazda Capella station wagon differed in length and width. So, the length of the car could be 4590 and 4690 mm, width - 1690 mm, height - 1465 mm in seven-seater versions and 1525 mm - in five-seater. The wheelbase is common for all modifications - 2575 mm. The vehicle's ground clearance ranged from 160 to 175 mm.

Mazda Capella station wagon was produced in the complete sets GL-X, SX, SV, FX, GT. The GL-X version included a power steering, power side mirrors, a sunroof, an adjustable steering column, power windows, and a cassette player. Trim was made of fabric. Armchairs had lateral support. The hatch was also installed on SX versions.

Options SV differed in the presence of mounts for child seats, driver's airbag and climate control. The FX version, in addition to the above, included front fog lights. The GT did not have an airbag, but leather steering wheel braid and a CD player (as an option) were available.
In 1989, Japan began selling a new generation of Mazda Capella coupe. The two-door car received an increased wheelbase and moved to a new, higher class: from this generation, all Mazda Capella were considered class D cars (previously the Capella belonged to class C). The dimensions of the fourth generation Mazda Capella coupe were as follows: length - 4450 mm, width - 1690 mm, height - 1360 mm. The coupe was the most compact among all the bodies produced in this generation, but there was enough space in the cabin to comfortably accommodate five. If necessary, the rear row of seats could be removed.
Another feature of the Mazda Capella coupe of this generation was the use on it (for the first time in the world) of a system of four steered wheels (4WS). The scheme of her work depended on the current speed of the compartment. The system was only available on E-GD8B and E-GDEB bodies.

Three types of gasoline engines were installed on the Mazda Capella coupe: a 1.8-liter (115 hp) and a two-liter capacity of 145 or 150 hp. The fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 7.9 - 10.2 liters. The capacity of the fuel tank is 60 liters.

Two types of gearboxes were available on the coupe: a four-speed automatic and five-speed mechanics. All modifications of the "Japanese" were front-wheel drive. The suspension of the Mazda Capella coupe consists of two suspension struts with stabilizers. Brakes - disc (front - ventilated).

In the Japanese market, only one coupe was introduced - the C2, which included power windows, power steering, power side mirrors, leather steering wheel braid, vertical steering wheel adjustment, air conditioning and a cassette player. To increase aerodynamics, a rear spoiler was installed on the Mazda Capella coupe. As an option, climate control and a sunroof were available.

The Mazda Capella coupe was discontinued in 1994.
