Hatchback, 3dr
The eighth generation Familia, which was produced in sedan and three-door hatchback bodies, became the owner of a very convenient and comfortable interior compared to its predecessors. In a word, a high level of performance is felt in the car. At the same time, the original version of the hatchback, called the Neo, was also produced for the domestic market - this car is easily recognizable by the characteristic curved line of the side windows and its striking design, which distinguishes itself from the Mazda Lantis sports coupe. The body design of Familia Neo is of great height, with the help of which designers tried to increase the interior space of the cabin to meet the requirements of a pro-American consumer. However, despite such an exterior decision, which was somewhat ahead of its time, Neo was categorically rejected by the main target audience - lovers of compact cars that preferred the usual Familia sedan and hatchback. Complete sets of this generation of the sedan were offered starting with the basic version of the ES, an interesting very low price compared to competitors. And with LS equipment and above, air conditioning, a power steering and a wide list of other equipment (much like an option) were already offered: alloy wheels, electric sunroof, rear spoiler, fog lights, power windows and central locking, folding mirrors, additional light shades, bottle holders, pockets doors and additional storage areas for small items, parking sensors, remote control key, climate control. The audio system in its simplest form is a radio or cassette player, and in more expensive versions an optional two-single AM / FM / CD player or even a TV tuner with an LCD screen and a remote control. In the top-end version of Interplay X, the car was equipped with the most powerful motor, 195 / 55R15 wheels, elements of a sports body kit. In 1996, facelift was carried out with minor changes in the exterior and interior. Mazda Familia is associated with such important concepts as economy and environmental friendliness. The model was equipped with various types of engines, but at first only 1.5 and 1.8 liter engines in various modifications with power from 97 to 135 hp were offered from gasoline. Only later, in 1996, in the wake of updating the model, the 1.3-liter unit with 85 hp returned to the range of engines. (Type C and Type S modifications) and a 1.6-liter engine with a capacity of 115 liters was added. with. The sedan was also offered with a 1.7-liter diesel engine rated at 88 hp.

The car retains the same type of independent suspension design on suspension struts with coil springs. Ventilated front disc brakes, rear drum brakes, but for versions with a 1.8-liter engine - and rear disc brakes. An all-wheel drive version of this model was also produced, though only a sedan and only in versions with a 1.6-liter engine or 1.7 diesel. The wheelbase of the car pretty well increased - from 2450 mm to 2605 mm, which contributed to a better organization of the interior space.

Until 1996, the basic list of sedan safety equipment was almost identical to that offered by the previous generation, but front seat belts with pretensioners were installed in expensive trim levels, and front airbags and an anti-lock brake system were offered as an option. After updating the model, part of this list was included in the standard equipment of all versions: driver’s pillow, front belts with pretensioners. In general, the level of car safety has increased - the car has successfully passed crash tests according to various standards. The innovative design of the Neo hatchback, among other things, contributed to better visibility, and more advanced aerodynamics contributed to the cleanliness of the windows and side mirrors. The eighth generation in terms of the variety of modifications looks a little more modest than the previous one, largely due to objective difficulties affecting all Japanese automakers in the 90s. However, despite this, it should be noted a progressive approach and attention to the interior space, thanks to which Familia stands just above its "classmates", especially in terms of the amount of space in the back. Given the affordable price, simple and fairly reliable chassis, a good set of positive qualities was obtained, which at one time contributed to the popularity of the model among the used right-hand drive cars imported into Russia in the zero years.
In 1994, the Mazda station wagon Mazda Familia Wagon appeared on the Japanese market, manufactured with the Y10 index and representing a copy of the Nissan Sunny California station wagon, in the same body type as the Nissan AD Wagon (Y10). It was produced on the basis of an OEM agreement between the companies. This car has nothing to do with the Mazda Familia family cars produced in parallel and was offered only for the domestic market (right-hand drive). At the same time, the model successfully fit into the Familia line and actually became the successor to the five-door version of the 6th generation Familia station wagon (type BF), which existed in the Mazda model range from 1989 to 1994. Only two types of engines were installed on the Familia Wagon: gasoline with a volume of 1.5 liters (94 hp) and diesel - 2.0 liters (76 hp). In this version, the Mazda Familia station wagon was discontinued in May 1996 due to the transition to OEM production of a copy of the new Nissan Wingroad model.  If we talk about equipping the station wagon Mazda Familia 1994-1996, then it is quite good, because the basis is not the most primitive basic equipment, but a quite advanced version, called XE, which can offer a power steering, radio, tilt-adjustable steering column, air conditioning, power windows and a central lock, and the options offered fog lights and a rear wiper. However, with a diesel engine, an affordable, more utilitarian version of XE extra was offered, which was devoid of power accessories, and foglights and a rear wiper were not offered even for a surcharge. The latter was standardly offered in the XG configuration (only a gasoline engine and four-wheel drive), along with additional options like tinted windows and a radio tape recorder. In the summer of 1995, the equipment was improved due to the appearance in the list of additional equipment of the sunroof, RV-package ("for walks and excursions") and roof rails. A car was produced with front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The latter was available only on versions with a gasoline engine. As already mentioned, two types of engines were installed on the Mazda Familia station wagon: gasoline GA15 with a volume of 1.5 liters and a maximum power of 94 hp (126 Nm) and diesel CD20 - 2.0 l with a capacity of 76 hp (132 Nm). Also for the station wagon, the manufacturer provided two types of gearboxes: a four-speed automatic and five-speed mechanics. Thus, the total number of variations in the engine and transmission reached six. In this generation, engineers have done everything possible to reduce fuel consumption. Therefore, gasoline modifications consumed 5.6 - 8.6 liters of fuel in the combined cycle, and the fuel consumption of diesel cars was even less: 3.3 - 4.2 liters. The volume of the fuel tank is 50 liters.

In front, the station wagon has an independent suspension with MacPherson strut, two options at the rear: either a semi-independent beam in front-wheel drive cars, or a dependent suspension (bridge) in all-wheel drive. In some front-wheel drive versions, the car could be equipped with a limited slip differential for a fee. Ahead of the Mazda Familia station wagon installed disc brakes, and rear - drum brakes. All steering options include power steering. Dimensions wagon has the following: 4175 x 1665 x 1480 mm (L x W x H). Interior dimensions - 1700 x 1390 x 1205 mm. Wheelbase - 2400 mm. The turning radius is 4.5-4.9 m. Ground clearance - 14-15 cm. Car loading capacity is 400 kg. Trunk volume - at the wagon level of the middle class, if not more.

From security systems, the standard equipment of the Mazda Familia Y10 1994-1996 includes three-point belts (except for the central back seat), door stiffeners, driver airbag (standard since 1995); Anti-lock braking system is available as an option.  For the wagon Mazda Familia 1994-1996, the same advantages and disadvantages are characteristic as for the Nissan donor model. Mazda Familia Wagon is designed to fit five and has a roomy trunk for transporting goods. The car has simple and reliable engines, as well as gearboxes. Cons - poor body corrosion protection and stiffer suspension.
