Lancer belongs to the class of compact cars, which also includes such well-known cars as Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sunny. Starting from this generation of the model, designers began to actively implement the concept of the similarity of Lancer with the compact Mirage hatchback. Concern Mitsubishi, developing Lancer, aimed at creating a "base car for a future era." The desire to create such a car was so strong that the Lancer installed a 1.6-liter V-shaped 6-cylinder engine, which is considered the smallest V6 engine in the world. Prior to this, engines of a similar layout were the prerogative of elite cars. In addition to this instance, there is a wide selection of engines used on the Lancer, ranging from 1.3-liter to 2-liter turbocharged diesel engines. Thus, the car is able to satisfy the needs of any user.
  There is also a sports modification of this car, equipped with an engine with the MIVEC system - an analogue of Honda's VTEC system that appeared a year later. But the most important event in the life of this generation of the model was the release of the Evolution modification. This powerful and at the same time lightweight sports sedan, which uses the latest turbo engine for that time, was designed to restore the image of Mitsubishi as a manufacturer of rally cars. The Japanese love to call Lancer Evolution "ranebo" - that is exactly what the abbreviated version of its name sounds in their language - LanEvo.
