Sedan
The third generation of the Nissan Cima appeared in 1996, following the new model of its main competitor - Crown Majesta from Toyota. The car raised its class even higher due to the increased interior size and the desire of developers to provide even more comfort to passengers in the rear seats, although the increase in wheelbase compared to its predecessor was relatively small. In overseas markets, the sedan was sold as the new Infiniti Q45. Both cars were equipped with a 4.1-liter V8 engine, inherited from the previous Cima series (270 hp). On the other hand, all-wheel drive modifications continued to be produced only in Japan. The option with a 3.0-liter V6 “turbo” has also survived under the hood - now this is a new engine with increased power to the same 270 “forces”.
Like the Cedric / Gloria sibling series with its two-model tandem strategy (Brougham and Gran Turismo), two diverse models were also offered here. On the one hand, it was a luxury sedan from the Limited Series, and on the other hand - a sports sedan of the Grand Touring Series type. The Grand Touring modification was distinguished by four headlights with a mask giving a sporty look, and a special, cellular front grille on a black background. Details of the Grand Touring interior are also selected so that the black color prevails. In addition, a series of “Grand Touring” was decorated with a package of aerodynamic parts, while the suspension had sports settings. In January 1997, the 10th Anniversary series, which was offered for both versions, joined the line. With some improvement, in September of that year, standard xenon headlights and a widescreen LCD Multi-AV system appeared. As a result, the car confirmed its image, which was characteristic of the first generation Cima.

Like the previous generation model, the car was equipped with an 8-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine with a V-shaped arrangement of cylinders and with a working volume of 4.1 and 3 liters, respectively. This is the familiar VH41DE unit and the new VQ30DET. The first one was obtained from the first generation Infiniti Q45 VH45DE engine - the cylinder-piston group was changed, the working volume was reduced from 4.5 to 4.1 liters. The second engine is well known in other sedans of the company - Cedric / Gloria / Leopard. Both power units are quite reliable, have a good resource and are relatively unpretentious. Both develop a maximum of 270 liters. with. and accelerate the sedan from standstill to 100 km / h in about 7-8.5 seconds. depending on version.

The chassis of the Nissan Cima Y33 retains the previously adopted suspension design - a rack-mount type on the front axle and multi-link rear. Brake system - with disk mechanisms (front ventilated). As an option, a limited slip differential and an active suspension controlled by electronics were installed. All-wheel drive modifications, as in the previous generation, appeared with some delay - in 1997, they are offered by the Limited series. Compared to its predecessor, the size of the sedan has changed slightly - in length it has stretched from 4930 to 4970 mm. Width increased from 1780 to 1820 mm. Height - from 1435 to 1460 mm. The size of the wheelbase has grown 15 mm and amounted to 2830 mm. The dimensions of the passenger compartment have significantly increased in the new generation - from the previous 1960 x 1490 x 1160 mm to the more impressive 2025 x 1515 x 1175 mm (L x W x H). Trunk volume - 420 liters.

In the basic configuration, the Nissan Cima Y33 1996-1998 is equipped with front and side airbags, door stiffeners (side impact panel), anti-lock braking system and the optional anti-slip system (standard on more expensive models). Since September 1997, the rear seat side airbags have been added to the VIP package. Like its predecessor, the third-generation Nissan Cima did not get in our market the popularity in the luxury sedan category that it deserves, noticeably losing to the Toyota Crown Majesta and Celsior. Meanwhile, this car (and its American brother Infiniti Q45) in many respects, at least, turned out to be no worse than world grandees, including German models. This is a well-controlled, reliable and well-equipped sedan with a spacious comfortable cabin. Disadvantages are the inevitable features of the class - large dimensions, tax and insurance, high fuel consumption.
