In 2005, Fuji Heavy Industries introduced an updated Subaru Forester with improved technical and operational characteristics. The car has a new grille, dual-lens headlights, new bumper and hood, and larger mirrors with integrated LED turn signals and body-colored housings. The rear lights have been updated. The restyled version has an automatic light beam adjustment system and a slightly improved suspension, which perfectly matches the character of this car. The salon has a new center console, improved upholstery fabric, etc. For the US market, Forester offers two versions: the 2.5X with a naturally aspirated engine and the 2.5XT with a turbocharger, the power of which has increased to 173 and 230 "forces", respectively.
Base 2005 Forester North American includes fog lights, filtered air conditioning, folding electric mirrors, keyless entry, roof rack, 4-speaker AM / FM / CD stereo, outside temperature indicator, rear seats (60/40 split) with center armrest. Further equipment adds an improved music system (CD changer, more powerful acoustics), 16-inch aluminum wheels, power driver's seat, heated front seats and mirrors, climate control, sunroof, leather interior. The LLBean Edition is a naturally aspirated Forester with an auto-dimming rearview mirror with integrated compass, self-leveling rear suspension, contrasting exterior cladding and unique rims, Alcantara leather and fabric trim, Momo steering wheel with wood and leather, the L logos are embroidered on the seats and carpets. L.Bean. The 2.5XT Limited has a turbocharged engine, leather seats, seven speakers with subwoofer and a sports package. For 2007, Subaru adds the Sports level, which is shared by both modifications, but the turbo version has 17-inch wheels and 215 / 55R17 tires, aluminum sill plates, a rear limited-slip differential, a chrome exhaust pipe. Forester 2005-2008 has two engine options under the hood. The powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder DOHC turbocharged 2.5XT now develops a maximum of 230 horsepower (at 5600 rpm), the torque remains the same at 319 Nm (at 3600 rpm). Active Valve Control System (AVCS) helps regulate engine operating parameters for ideal throttle response and fuel efficiency. The naturally aspirated model has a maximum power of 173 hp and a peak torque of 225 Nm (at 4400 rpm). Both engines can work in conjunction with "mechanics" or "automatic".

Front and rear, the Subaru Forester has independent rack-mount suspension (front L-arm, rear with parallel rods), coil springs and anti-roll bars. Branded "boxers" Subaru - horizontally opposed engines - allow you to achieve a lower center of gravity, balance the distribution of weight. All Foresters come with four-wheel drive. At the same time, with a five-speed manual transmission, a central differential with a viscous clutch divides the engine power 50/50 between the front and rear wheels, redistributing traction when the front or rear wheels slip, and with an automatic transmission, an active all-wheel drive system with variable torque transmission using electronics is used ... An optional rear limited slip differential was offered for the vehicle. The variable steering ratio provides a reasonably quick response and a small turning radius of 5 meters. In the second generation, the Forester retained the same wheelbase as the first model (2525 mm), but the dimensions of the cabin were still slightly increased - its total length is 1795 mm, width is 1455 mm, and the height is 1245 mm. These are not the worst indicators in the class. The trunk volume is quite modest - 388 liters.

After restyling, the following set of security systems is available for the Subaru Forester. These are two-stage front airbags, side airbags, active front head restraints with improved protection against neck injuries, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution in all versions. Traction and stability control systems are available for the more expensive models. In the second generation, the Forester performs well in IIHS and NHTSA crash tests. At the same time, the IIHS calls the vehicle the “Best Choice” in the compact SUV class.

In the new generation, Subaru Forester has become more interesting, while not losing the best qualities of the previous generation. The car has repeatedly won various awards, occupied the highest places in reliability ratings: as the best-selling car, as the "ideal car of the year", etc. Restyling brought the Forester to a new level. The advantages of the model are handling, equipment level, perfect four-wheel drive. Cons - the interior does not match the best representatives of the class, weak iron and paintwork, relatively expensive maintenance.
