Sedan
The 4th generation Legacy sedan began production in 2003. He inherited and developed the concept of his predecessor, but at the same time acquired an even more sporty image. Besides the dynamism of its exterior design, the exterior dimensions have finally reached size 3. This car has excellent aerodynamic performance. The high aerodynamic characteristics provide fuel economy, especially when driving at high speeds, as well as improved handling while increasing driving stability. The increase in external dimensions, however, mainly leads to an increase in the weight of the car. However, the designers of the Legacy B4 have made every effort to ensure that this does not happen. For this purpose, almost all parts of the machine were redesigned. And thanks to the change in the position of the engine, it was possible to achieve not only a decrease in the weight of the 4WD system, but also an improvement in driving characteristics. In addition, weight savings have been achieved through the use of lighter materials that also offer better wear resistance.
The demand for the new car has exceeded all expectations. Just ten days after the start of sales, the number of orders significantly exceeded the monthly sales target. And in November 2003, Subaru Legacy at home was awarded the nomination "Best passenger car". At the beginning of production, the Legacy B4 sedan was offered in the "i", "R", "GT" and "GT Spec B" trim levels, where the most expensive version was available DVD with a 7-inch touchscreen display with navigation and traffic alert system, electric drive seats and leather upholstery, high-end Macintosh audio system, electric large sunroof, security system, xenon headlights and 18 "alloy wheels and other options for increased comfort and improved appearance. The body of the 3-liter modification is equipped with an original bumper design, which gives it a unique appearance. In 2006 the car passed the stage of "rejuvenation" - the head and rear light optics, radiator grill, bumpers, hood were changed. This generation was rich in various special and limited editions. The Legacy is powered by horizontally opposed 4- and 6-cylinder engines. Until 2008, the most powerful in their lineup was a 2-liter DOHC turbocharged engine, then a 3-liter 24DOHC engine with a variable valve timing system, then a naturally aspirated 2-liter DOHC engine with a variable valve timing system and, finally, a 2-liter engine SOHC. Later, modifications with 2.5-liter engines went on sale: atmospheric SOHC and turbo DOHC. The latter - with a capacity of 285 hp. in combination with a manual transmission - it was presented by the S402 modification, divided between the sedan and the station wagon.

The suspension has not structurally changed in comparison with the previous generation: the struts are in front, the rear is multi-link. On GT versions, the suspension is upgraded, with inverted Bilstein shock absorbers and a number of other technical solutions. As, for example, in the already mentioned S402 of the Grand Touring class, a product of Subaru Tecnica International, where, in addition to sports shock absorbers, Brembo brakes with six pistons in the front calipers and two in the rear are used, a strut to improve the characteristics of the chassis, a steering with a modified gear ratio for greater sensitivity and sharpness of management. Legacy B4 safety systems include front airbags, child seat mountings; the body of increased strength is equipped with stiffeners in the doors, seat belts - with pretensioners. Of the electronic systems, there are ABS (anti-lock braking system), Brake Assist (auxiliary braking), EBD (electronic brake force distribution). Options: side airbags and traction control. In more expensive trim levels in the list of available equipment - active head restraints, electronic stability control system. One of the safest versions is the Legacy B4 EyeSight (2008), which uses a new collision avoidance assist system, consisting of two cameras located on the sides of the rearview mirror, which create stereoscopic "vision" with an estimate of the distance, helping to maintain a safe distance at track, track pedestrians, etc. Also in this configuration, radar cruise control is used as standard.

In this generation, the Legacy B4 was still produced in a body with a hard top and frameless doors - even such a nuance is highly appreciated by many car lovers, and the Legacy, perhaps, has been trying to maintain this style in the mainstream sector for the longest time. In general, the key to the success of the next generation of the Legacy sedan lies in the successful external design and sports characteristics of the model; horizontally opposed engines that combine low fuel consumption and high power; excellent quality and reliability of the vehicle. Thanks to this, cars of this series are highly popular in the secondary market.
