Over the twenty years of the model's existence, with each generation of the Legacy, it has become faster, more economical, more comfortable and safer. For the sake of the last point, in this generation, frameless doors had to be sacrificed, the design of the door handles was changed, the hood became aluminum, which contributed to an additional weight reduction, because the weight of the car as a whole increased by about 100 kg compared to its predecessor. Keeping in mind the old traditions of presenting various innovations, the developers introduced in this model the "Cradle Mount" engine support system, which not only improves engine sound insulation, but also reduces the likelihood of serious damage in a collision. Domestic vehicles are offered in all trim levels without sound, with a choice of audio options, the stock or highly acclaimed premium McIntosh audio system. In addition, a navigation system with HDD, 8-inch high-definition VGA LCD display is offered. This also includes a set of additional functions: USB, rear view camera, remote control, etc. Legacy offers a host of high-end options such as smart car access, separate climate control (and additional vents for the second row), power seats, automatic flat-floor rear seats, headlight washers and other "nice little things." Of the expensive special editions of the limited edition, the "2.5GT TS" can be distinguished, in the interior of which sports seats are used, upholstery with a combination of leather and Alcantara, the speedometer of the updated dashboard is marked up to 260 km / h - taking into account the improved sports capabilities of the modification, equipped with 285 hp motor. Its exterior is refined with 18-inch wheels, spoilers, a sports exhaust system. After restyling in 2012, the Legacy's exterior (new headlights, bumpers, grille, muffler outlet) and the interior were changed, versions with a new 2.0GT DIT engine appeared.

The car is equipped with engines of several types with horizontally opposed arrangement. Initially, a 2.5-liter engine was offered, while it was possible to choose either SOHC or DOHC Turbo, with the first option in combination with a Lineartronic variator, and the latter with either a 6MKPP or a 5AKPP with manual mode. Since 2012, the power of the base engine of the restyled versions has been raised from 170 to 173 hp. with., and in addition to the most powerful version, the FA20 engine with twin-scroll turbocharging and DIT direct fuel injection began to be offered, as a result, a power of 300 hp was achieved. This motor is completed only with a variator, but what a! - it is able to adequately "digest" the incredible torque of 400 Nm. All Legacy Wagon cars are equipped with a unique SI Drive system that can adjust the speed of the car's reaction to the driving style.

The Legacy suspension is one of the car's greatest strengths. Minimal roll, excellent handling, high energy efficiency is ensured by a combination of shock absorbers in the front and double wishbones at the rear. The acceptable maneuverability of the Subaru Legacy is preserved - the minimum turning radius is 5.5 meters, which is not bad for a car with such body dimensions. The braking system includes disc brakes on all wheels, and in turbo versions, ventilated discs both front and rear, and for sports modifications it is characteristic that it uses a modernized suspension with improved characteristics. The Legacy Touring Wagon safety equipment includes front airbags (side and curtain airbags - optional), seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters, a child seat retention mechanism. Of the electronic systems in the basic configuration of the car, there are ABS (anti-lock braking system), EBD (electronic brake force distribution), Brake Assist (auxiliary braking), in addition - VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control), a dynamic stability control system. It is worth noting directly the high degree of rigidity of the new body. In expensive trim levels, there is an EyeSight collision avoidance system.

With its high functionality and excellent sense of comfort offered to the driver and passengers, the Legacy Wagon proves its ability to remain one of the best in the Touring class. Initially, the Legacy model was presented on the Russian market in two body styles - a sedan and a station wagon, but back in 2007 Subaru decided to abandon the production of the Legacy Wagon (station wagon) in foreign markets due to the presence of a classmate Outback in the lineup. Thus, today Russian buyers are offered updated Subaru Legacy sedans equipped with branded horizontally opposed engines and a symmetric all-wheel drive system, which is mandatory on all versions.

The distribution of torque in this modification is monitored by either a 6-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (variator). The 2.5-liter engine in the atmospheric version produces 167 hp, and in the turbocharged version, a significantly greater power - 265 "horses". In the first case, a continuously variable transmission is offered, but for a turbo - a 5-speed "automatic". Efficiency also differs - if, due to the variator, a less powerful engine manages to maintain consumption within 8 liters per "hundred", then the turbocharged version consumes about 10.6 liters at the same distance. The proprietary system of variable torque distribution SI-Drive (Subaru Intelligent Drive) is designed to select the most optimal driving options - from urban traffic jams to aggressive sports driving, in the latter case, minimizing the engine response to pressing the accelerator pedal. The Subaru Legacy's independent suspension provides a smooth ride and stability on the road, as well as responsive control systems. The longitudinal position of the engine relative to the transmission minimized body lateral rolls and ensured optimal weight distribution. As a result, a low center of gravity and excellent weight distribution allow the Legacy to maneuver confidently at high speeds. In the all-wheel drive system, which gives the car additional advantages over mono-drive vehicles, the power is transmitted to the front wheels directly from the transmission, to the rear wheels through the rear differential.

The Legacy sedan is equipped with the most modern active and passive safety systems. The reinforced ring-shaped carcass provides a more rigid body structure. Once again, the manufacturers of Subaru Legacy managed to demonstrate a very high technological level for their time. Cars of the fifth generation surpass many competitors in their filling, but this inevitably affects the final price of the car, where the basic version with the simplest engine costs more than a million rubles. As a result, even in the secondary market, fresh Legacy sedans do not spoil the buyer with the breadth of supply and prices.
