Based on the 2nd generation Legacy back in 1994, this model has an off-road feel to it. Driving performance corresponds to the category "sports station wagon". It was originally called the Outback outside of Japan, the Legacy Grand Wagon in the domestic market, and since 1997 it has been known as the Lancaster. In 2003, when Fuji Heavy Industries released the next generation, then in Japan itself this car began to be sold under the Outback name. It was officially presented at the Frankfurt Auto Show (Germany), and its sales at home began in October 2003. Together with the base Legacy model, the car is built on a completely new platform and is equipped with Subaru's powerful boxer engines: 2.5 L (165 hp). from.) and 3.0 liters (250 hp).
Outback differs from regular Legacy models with a special design of bumpers, fenders, side skirts, 17-inch alloy wheels and huge fog lights. Two additional colors have been added to the four body colors of the Legacy. The Outback may offer ivory leather upholstery with a two-tone combination of front and door trim (dark top, light bottom), but the black interior is just as luxurious. Fully functional, the car will offer a climate control system, a sunroof, adjustable rear seat backs, a CD receiver with 6 speakers. The driver's seat is supplemented with an electric drive, there is an electroluminescent illumination of devices, an electric tailgate, a three-spoke MOMO steering wheel braided with soft leather, it has buttons for controlling gear shifting in sport mode. Two types of engines were installed on the Outback: a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, also boxer. The base motor produces a maximum 165 "forces" and works in conjunction with a 4-speed automatic transmission. 3-liter engine - 250 hp, equipped with a 5-speed automatic with manual shifting. According to the modifications, the fuel consumption in the 10/15 mode is 7.7 and 8.6 liters per 100 km. With high-quality service, the engines are quite reliable, but they have their own diseases, such as problems with the cooling system, cylinder head leaks, and increased demands are made on the quality of the oil. The suspension of the car is completely independent: MacPherson strut at the front and a multi-link at the rear. In the new generation, the chassis is characterized by a more rigid setting, the car keeps the track perfectly. In the basic version, symmetrical AWD all-wheel drive is used, in the 3-liter versions, the VTD AWD system is used, where in normal conditions the thrust is distributed in a ratio of 45/55 to the front and rear axles, the VDC stabilization system is an option. Compared to previous generations, the Outback has increased in size again: its length is now almost 4.8 m. Width 1770 mm, height 1605 mm. The wheelbase is 2670 mm. The increased dimensional data made the new station wagon even more spacious. Trunk volume - 459/1649 liters. The safety of the driver and passengers is ensured by the presence of two-stage front airbags, side airbags and full-size airbags. Active front seat head restraints, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution, and tire pressure monitoring are also standard. The six-cylinder versions include electronic stability control as standard, which tracks the vehicle's course, preventing it from falling off the chosen trajectory in difficult conditions. The car received high marks in crash tests.

Such a concept as the "Grand Wagon", which corresponds to Outback, first appeared on the American market. This was the name of the category of cars intended for outdoor activities such as crossing small rivers and driving on mountain roads. Volvo has similar models - XC70, Audi - All Quattro. Their advantages are powerful engines, four-wheel drive, spacious interior. The Subaru Outback station wagon for the domestic market is well equipped and has many options that were not available in other markets. The owners call the disadvantages more expensive maintenance and operation against the background of classmates, as well as long overhangs, high fuel consumption.
The third generation Subaru Outback sedan has become more spacious and powerful. Outwardly it looks very stylish, on the exterior there are more smooth rounded lines. The quality of interior materials has improved. Recall that the four-door Outback in a plastic body lining similar to the Outback station wagon and with increased ground clearance was produced specifically for the United States. In the third generation, the car was produced until the 2007 model year. The Subaru Outback sedan is equipped with horizontally opposed motors and permanent all-wheel drive - the AWD system.
Standard equipment for the Outback 3.0 R sedan for the American market included 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, fog lights, heated leather seats for the front seats, and heated mirrors. The equipment also included a CD changer, an on-board computer, cruise control, a sunroof, climate control, wood trim inserts. Options included a rear spoiler, auto-dimming rearview mirror, navigation. In 2006, the 2.5i Limited version was offered, with a rear limited slip differential, 16-inch wheels, a windshield defroster and repeaters in the mirrors, a garage door opener. Top-end performance is the 3.0 R LLBean Edition - a high-end sedan with standard compass and temperature display, mahogany and leather Momo steering wheel, perforated leather seats, steering wheel audio controls, electrochromic rearview mirror and an additional navigation system. The Subaru Outback sedan in the 3.0 R modification is equipped with a 6-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine of the DOHC type with an output of 250 hp, which is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission Sport Shift. This engine provides flawless smoothness and good dynamics, but is far from ideal in fuel consumption - the economy indicator in the American specification is 19/26 mpg (city, highway), which corresponds to 9-12.4 l / 100 km. Indicators of the 2.5-liter version of SOHC (175-horsepower "four") with a 4AT transmission are 21/28 MPG or 8.4-11.2 l / 100 km. With high-quality service, the engines are quite reliable, but they have their own diseases, such as problems with the cooling system, cylinder head leaks. The 3.0-liter chain motor is considered very reliable, but when using cheap oil, the life of the timing chain and tensioner is significantly reduced. The suspension of the car is completely independent: MacPherson strut at the front and a multi-link at the rear. In the new generation Outback, the chassis is characterized by a more rigid tuning, the car keeps the track perfectly. Sedan dimensions: length 4729 mm, width 1770 mm, height 1501 mm. The wheelbase is 2670 mm. The rear seats of the Outback (BP) sedan do not fold down, but there is a boot hatch that has a volume of about 311 liters. The safety of the driver and passengers is ensured by the presence of two-stage front airbags, side airbags installed on the front seats and full-size airbags. Active front seat head restraints, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution, and tire pressure monitoring are also standard. More expensive versions include an electronic stabilization system that tracks the course of the car, preventing it from falling off the chosen trajectory in difficult conditions. The car received high marks in IIHS and NHTSA tests.

As before, the Outback sedan was aimed at lovers of conventional four-door models, with the ability to “show off” both on the track and in moderate off-road conditions. The reliability of Subaru's all-wheel drive makes the Outback one of the best in its class. Despite the fact that the sedan version is also an exclusive option. The disadvantages of the model are usually called more expensive maintenance and operation compared to other classmates, as well as high fuel consumption.
