Subaru R-2 - this was the name of the small car in 1969, which Fuji Heavy Industries released as the successor to the famous "Ladybug" - the Subaru-360 model (1958 - 1970). Presented under the motto "Hard Mini", the R-2 was produced for a short time - only until 1973. But he also managed to leave a lot of nostalgic memories, which made it possible after almost 35 years to return not only to the name, but also to the non-trivial images of these two cars. The new model was shown at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show and went on sale in December of that year. The design component was of no small value. But the technology too - the Subaru R2 was equipped with an economical 660-cc four-cylinder engine and offered many modifications. The design of the Subaru R2 most closely resembles an Italian car. This is not surprising, since Andreas Zapatinas, a specialist discharged from the AlfaRomeo design center, was responsible for its development. Immediately striking is the front part of the car, which is decorated in the "aviation" style. It is not for nothing that Subaru is, first of all, airplanes. The silhouette of the car is made using the One Motion technique and is emphasized by the line of the fenders. This combination of silhouette and line of fenders creates a mood not so much automobile as "aviation". An interesting find: the side repeaters and door handles are combined with the side molding. In short, it can be considered that Subaru, a highly respected car manufacturer, has brought a new kind of minicar to the world. The interior of the Subaru R2 is pleasant in color combinations, the front panel looks stylish and original. The high window line enhances the sense of security. The most inexpensive configuration of the 2004 Subaru R2 includes electric mirrors, a rear wiper, central locking with remote control, power windows, and a CD player. The most complete equipment will offer fog lights, a tachometer, climate control, alloy wheels.

The car's chassis is based on independent front and rear suspensions. Turbo trims are considered sportier and have an appropriately tuned suspension. The dimensions of the car clearly fit into the class standard: the length is 3395 mm, the width is 1475 mm, and the height is 1520 mm (the turbo model has 1525 mm). The ground clearance is 155-160 mm. Despite the fact that the car does not at all look like a minivan, 4 adults can easily accommodate in the cabin, and in numbers, the length of the cabin does not look so bad - 1690 mm. The car, of course, cannot boast of spaciousness in width - only 1220 mm. And the height is 1180 mm. The trunk is not impressive in size, besides, part of it is eaten by the wheel arches, at least a little, but invading the interior. But if you fold the rear seats (50:50), you get a fairly roomy, almost cubic compartment.

As a miniature car, the Subaru R2 nevertheless meets the necessary safety requirements. It is equipped as standard with two front airbags, three-point belts. All but the most inexpensive cars were equipped with anti-lock braking systems combined with electronic brake force distribution and auxiliary braking systems, and options included side airbags. The body shell provides increased safety. It is noted that the special design of the front of the hatchback withstands a frontal impact with an offset, equivalent to a collision with an ordinary car at a relative speed of 100 km / h.

Weighing only 770-880 kg, the Subaru R2 has a rather lively character, although, of course, a turbo unit is more preferable for traveling on the highway.
