In 2011, at the Shanghai International Motor Show, Subaru unveiled the Subaru XV concept car, the prototype of a new compact crossover based on the Impreza, which began production in 2012. While the XV is not formally part of the Impreza family, in fact it is not that much different from the hatchback. The "off-road" version of the Impreza is distinguished from the civilian by plastic linings on the fenders, slightly modified bumpers and increased ground clearance (the ground clearance is 22 cm). Otherwise, the car did not receive special off-road skills, but for not the best city roads, the car's abilities should be enough in abundance. In the European market, the crossover is equipped with a new-generation horizontal-boxer engine with a volume of 1.6 or 2.0 liters (a tandem with a variator is possible), as well as an updated version of a diesel power plant with a manual transmission. Russian buyers can only purchase a car with gasoline engines. The Subaru XV interior is distinguished by high quality materials and finishes. The instrument panel is made in the traditional form and is equipped with an information display. In the more expensive version with a two-liter motor, two color monitors are installed in the front panel. The first one is located at the top and is for informational purposes: it displays on-board computer readings, fuel consumption graphs, navigation system tips. You can display a schematic image of a four-wheel drive on the screen, and if ESP is triggered, the picture will show which wheels are slowing down and at what moment. Well, the second color display with a touch-screen function manages the multimedia functions of the car and is even able to play video from external media. If we talk about the standard equipment of the basic configuration, then there are fog lights, headlight washers, heated mirrors, tilt and reach steering column, dividing armrest, heated front seats, power windows, climate control, 4 speakers, AUX connector. More expensive configurations will offer chrome door handles, leather steering wheel, leather upholstery, start button, dual-zone climate control, electric driver's seat, electric sunroof, 6 speakers, USB connector, Hands free system.

The most affordable version of the XV is with a 1.6-liter 114-horsepower engine. Paired with a 5-speed "mechanics" acceleration to 100 km / h will take 13.1 seconds. The maximum speed is 179 km / h. The version with a variator has more modest performance - acceleration to 100 km / h in 13.8 seconds, maximum speed of 175 km / h. The average fuel consumption will be 7.3 l / 100 km. The two-liter engine produces 150 hp. and can also be equipped with a "mechanics" (here it is 6-speed) or a variator, the latter is equipped with a manual mode with fixed pseudo-gears and control using paddle shifters. Acceleration time to "hundreds" - 10.5 and 10.7 seconds, maximum speed 187 km / h. Average consumption - 8 and 7.9 l / 100 km.

In terms of the chassis, the car does not fundamentally differ from the "Impreza" - the design is the same (MacPherson strut in front and a double-lever in the rear), but the suspension has been significantly modified taking into account the increased ground clearance, a higher center of gravity of the Subaru XV and other differences. All this made it possible to endow the crossover with handling characteristics comparable to a conventional hatchback. Subaru XV is equipped as standard with electric booster, disc brakes (front ventilated). Cars with a variator have their own symmetric all-wheel drive scheme - with active torque distribution, while for cars with a "mechanic", a variant with a center differential and a locking viscous coupling is implemented. The XV's body is stiffer and stronger thanks to the increased use of high-strength steels. Of the security systems, the standard equipment includes front airbags (driver's and front passenger's), ISOFIX mount, belt tensioners, a set of active systems (ABS, EBD, auxiliary braking systems, directional stability, lift assistance). The more expensive versions add side airbags and curtain airbags, cruise control, adaptive road lighting, rain and light sensors.

Subaru XV was created primarily for urban use. It is felt even in the fact that the creators of the model sacrificed some off-road motives for the sake of urban handling. In addition, many owners note the disadvantage of the relatively small size of the luggage compartment (309/1200 liters). The 1.6-liter version does not show the wonders of dynamics. However, for ordinary city traffic and on the highway with an incomplete load, the characteristics are quite enough. But a modification with a 2-liter engine is preferable.
