The second generation Suzuki Jimny appeared in 1981 and, like the previous one, has progressively developed, replacing various modifications and becoming better. After the JA71 series appeared in 1986 in addition to the JA51 version with a 1.3-liter engine, it became possible to talk about a completely new stage in the development of the model. For the first time in Jimny, a turbocharged engine with fuel injection was used, which has a fairly decent speed and at the same time demonstrates high traction characteristics. Improvements have also been made in terms of completing the model. Vans with a high panoramic roof appeared - a very convenient tourist option that appeared at the time of the development of the JA51 series. The designers and the appearance of the car, which received a new radiator grill and standard fog lights in the “550 intercooler turbo” trim levels, modernized. The interior has improved, many of whose components were later borrowed by the next modification of the JA11. Depending on the destination, the car was produced in a three-door rigid body, with an open body and as a commercial van.

Initially, a 543 cc F5A three-cylinder engine equipped with turbocharging and fuel injection developed 42 hp. (6000 rpm), and a maximum torque of 59 Nm accounted for 4000 rpm. After the modernization of 1987, the engine significantly increased power, equipped with an intercooler, now it developed 52 liters. with. (5500 rpm), and the torque rose to 71 Nm (4000). Fuel consumption did not change significantly and amounted to a little more than 5 liters per 100 km. At the same time, a simplified version of the engine with 38 hp was used. for the Commercial Van series. In all versions, the motor is equipped with a five-speed gearbox, which reduces noise and increases speed characteristics.

There were no significant changes in the design of the chassis (the front and rear are still continuous axles on the springs), however, the car got a parking brake with rear-wheel drive instead of the universal joint. For practicality, individual versions began to be equipped with larger rims, increased ground clearance. If the Jimny "550 intercooler turbo" it is 220 mm, then the commercial van - 240 mm. Four-wheel drive - all the same Part Time with a rigidly connected front axle and lower gear.

Regarding security, too, no special development has occurred. But still, something was changing. For example, as an additional measure, a buzzer appeared in the car warning that a speed of 90 km / h was reached. In addition, a powerful anti-roll bar served to reduce body roll in corners and when driving around obstacles.

Among all-wheel drive cars, Suzuki Jimny enjoys the well-deserved fame of an unpretentious and reliable SUV. Very compact and lightweight, equipped with a full-fledged 4WD system, it at the same time has a simple and maintainable design. Given that the resource of native engines on most copies has long been worked out, and the frame body is quite durable, the car can serve as an excellent object for tuning. However, albeit rarely, but you can still find on sale well-preserved copies of the release of the late 80s, sometimes even in a completely original state.
