The Suzuki Wagon R, which began production in 1993, instantly achieved high sales figures. In the wake of success, it has been updated twice. The first time it happened in 1995, the second in 1997, a year and a half before the next generation. If changes in the exterior are minimal (a new design of the front grille, expanded color scheme, etc.), then everything inside is aimed at increasing comfort. In addition, already anticipating the appearance and capabilities of the machines of the next series, the manufacturer nevertheless tried to equip the first-generation Wagon R with many modern functions, including ABS. The line of units has become richer than ever: it includes 3-cylinder units SOHC or DOHC, atmospheric (55-58 hp) or turbocharged (64 hp).
After the second update, the Suzuki Wagon R has improved seat upholstery and their design, which has become more convenient, the dashboard has been modernized, and a new air conditioner has been installed. New sports equipment “Aero RS” deserved attention, featuring a special bumper with built-in fog lights, an exclusive air intake on the hood, etc. Customers were offered the RX Limited model, equipped with a 5.8-inch color LCD monitor (September 1997). Interesting new configurations of the “Column” type (November 1997), in which the automatic gearbox shift knob is mounted on the steering column, and sofa seats are installed in front. These models have a “wood look” dashboard finish, and the exterior look is “retro look”; in 1998, the Column Turbo was added.

The lineup of Suzuki Wagon R 1997-1998 looks very diverse. In April 1997, the first modifications appeared with a new, all-aluminum DOHC 12V motor marked K6A, which had a power of 58 hp. (60 Nm). It was also proposed its turbocharged version and intercooler - from the Alto Works model, the engine power was 64 liters. with. (103 Nm). But the old "old man" F6A remained in the ranks, which in the turbo version produced the same 64 "forces", although it was inferior in torque (98 Nm). For the most inexpensive modifications, the manufacturer continued to install atmospheric F6A with a return of 55 forces. To the 5-speed "mechanics" and the 3-speed "automatic", a 4-band automatic transmission was added, which was installed on front-wheel drive models with the new K6A turbo. The drive of the Wagon R could be front or full. Depending on the version, gasoline consumption ranged from 4.6 to 6.5 liters of gasoline per 100 km.

Suzuki Wagon R has an independent front suspension (MacPherson struts) and a rear suspension of the ITL (Isolated Trailing Link) type, which is a beam with trailing arms and coil springs. All-wheel drive cars have a rear suspension - a bridge on springs. The brake system combines disk mechanisms in the front (for turbo - increased diameter) and drum mechanisms in the rear. Power steering rack and pinion type. The dimensions of the body of the Wagon R were imposed by the standard for "key cars", advanced back in 1990. Its length did not exceed 3.3 m (in this case - 3295 mm), a width of 1.4 m (1395 mm), and a height of 2 meters (1640-1695 mm). The spaciousness of the cabin in this class is a relative concept. The Wagon R had a length of 1685 mm, a width of 1180, and a height of 1315-1340 mm. With the rear seats folded, a flat trunk area was obtained. A high roof made it possible to load more things than, for example, in the sister Suzuki Alto, and an additional glazing height improved visibility.

After the second restyling, the Suzuki Wagon R again improved its safety performance. First of all, the car acquired a 3-channel ABS with 4 sensors, which, although it was installed as an option of the manufacturer and only for all-wheel drive cars, but gave the buyer another opportunity to choose. In addition, in combination with this option, a driver airbag was installed as standard. For front-wheel drive models, only a cushion was optionally offered.

The advantages of the Wagon R are clear even from its name: almost “bus” landing, decent internal height, etc. Disadvantages - low ground clearance, weak base engine. It is worth considering the high cost of spare parts for this generation. Two restylings have significantly improved the car since its debut in 1993. But already in 1998, the next generation appeared, it corresponded to the changed standards for key cars and new, more stringent safety requirements.
