SUV
The next series of Toyota 4Runner SUV, released in 2002, received the designation N210. The basis for the car was the current generation of the Land Cruiser Prado (J120). The appearance of the car has been significantly updated, but the appearance of the new 4Runner still retains hereditary features, and the presence of a spar frame and a dependent rear suspension remains an unchanged sign of this model. The new SUV became larger than its predecessor, received a 114 mm longer wheelbase (2789 mm) and a more spacious interior, as well as improved driving performance and new engines. The basic modification is now equipped with a 4.0-liter V6 engine. In addition, the “fourth” 4Runner for the first time received a V8 engine with a displacement of 4.7 liters (as in the Land Cruiser 100, Sequoia and Tundra models, but with some changes in tuning). Another innovation of this generation is the 5-speed automatic transmission (A750E-I for rear-wheel drive cars and A750F-I for 4WD).
Three levels of equipment were available for Toyota 4Runner N210 series: SR5 (basic), sports (Sport Edition) and top-end (Limited). The basic version was equipped with steel wheels with 265 / 70R16 tires and a standard roof rack. The sports version is distinguished by a chrome radiator grill and roof rails, an air intake on the hood, “foglights”, body-colored mirrors, alloy wheels with 265 / 65R17 tires. Initially, the SR5 and SE versions were offered with gray bumpers and exterior trim, while at LTD these elements were colored, and since 2003 it has become the standard for all models. The structure of the SUV equipment includes air conditioning with an air filter and automatic temperature control, an additional climate control panel for rear passengers, and Limited has a dual-zone climate control. The standard audio system has 6 speakers and a 4-channel amplifier with a power of 160 watts, but for an extra charge, an 8-channel JBL audio system with 10 speakers (360 W) was offered. In Sport and Limited models, audio control buttons are placed on the steering wheel. Other features of the car were the presence of power windows with anti-pinch function, a lot of compartments for storing things, an infotainment system in the top configuration, etc.

The fourth-generation Toyota 4Runner base engine is an all-aluminum 1GR-FE V6 powertrain with a VVT-i system. Its main advantage is not so much resourcefulness as a very high-torque character, thanks to which this unit has become an invariable sign of Toyota SUVs. With a working volume of 3956 cc he develops a maximum power of 245 hp and torque of 382 Nm. The 2UZ-FE V8 engine (4664 cc) has a low compression ratio (9.6), a block of ductile iron and a very long resource. It gives maximum 235 or 270 “forces” (with the VVT-i system since January 2005), and the torque reaches its maximum value of 434 and 447 Nm, respectively, and high thrust is already provided at medium speeds. The gearbox is 4- or 5-speed for the V6, while for the V8 it is only 5-speed. All engines use AI-92 brand gas equally. All-wheel drive versions of the V6 have a consumption of 14.7 l / 100 km in the city and 11.8 l / 100 km on the highway. The V8 engine consumes 14.7-16.8 and 12.4-13.8 l / 100 km under the same conditions.

The front suspension of Toyota 4Runner is independent double wishbone, the rear is dependent. The X-REAS hydraulic suspension system (standard for SE and an option for Limited) is used to level the body: it connects all shock absorbers with highways and levels rolls and buildup. For the top version, rear air suspension is available. The car received an upgraded steering system, it became more responsive and improved feedback. On models with a V6 engine, the MultiMode 4WD shift-on-fly all-wheel drive system is used, which is designed in such a way that the SUV is rear-wheel drive, but exactly until the front axle is activated, with five operating modes provided: H2 , H4, H4L, L4, L4L. On models with a V8 engine, a full-time 4WD system is installed, which can switch between H4, H4L, L4, L4L modes, in addition, the panel has a “C. Diff lock ". The dimensions of the body of the Toyota 4Runner N210 are: length - 4801 mm, width - 1875 mm, height - 1819 mm. Ground clearance - 226 mm (2WD) or 231 mm (4WD). Maximum load capacity - 550-660 kg. The luggage compartment has a volume of 1150 liters. The two-level shelf allows more optimal use of the interior space.

The Toyota 4Runner N210 received an all-new chassis with increased torsional rigidity and an integrated front safety casing for energy absorption. The equipment includes two airbags (option - side airbags and curtain airbags), ABS, TRAC systems (traction control) and VSC (vehicle stability control), assistants when descending from a mountain and when starting uphill, monitoring tire pressure, a camera reverse gear (since 2003) and other functions.

In the fourth generation, Toyota 4Runner went beyond the previous standards - the car received truly powerful engines. At the same time, even the capabilities of a 4.0-liter engine are enough for the main tasks, except that the 4.7-liter engine has more torque on the bottoms and it is “more traction”, plus there is a difference in all-wheel drive. Before buying, you will need to check the X-REAS system and the rear air suspension (if any), the all-wheel drive control system. It should be noted that since 2004 some components of the transmission have become leak-tight and do not have a dipstick (Toyota claims a lifetime for the use of fluids). In the summer of 2005, the model was updated.
