The sixth generation was the last in the history of Toyota Chaser, which dates back to 1977 as a representative of the diverse Cressida family, which includes Mark II / Chaser / Cresta models in the domestic market. After Toyota Mark II had a complete change of image due to the appearance in 2000 of a new generation of this model in the 110th body, Chaser continued to be produced in the 100th body for some time. As before, the Chaser features a sporty focus. Despite the excellent speed characteristics common to all modifications, the Tourer V modification, which has gained special popularity among speed lovers, can be separately noted.
In this generation, the basic old configurations were preserved, a number of which begin from the XL and Raffine versions, moving to the more expensive Avante to the real sports versions with the Tourer S and Tourer V turbo engines, where the latter is distinguished by an outstanding engine power of 280 liters. with. The Tourer V has different sizes of front and rear wheels, xenon headlights, fog lights, a rear spoiler, a sports exhaust, an automatic transmission with manual gear shift. In models of the Tourer S modification, a 5-speed automatic transmission is installed. A rather rare tuning modification, called TRD SPORT, was also sold today, which also contributed to the maintenance and development of the sports image of this model. In the top trim levels of the Avante G, as always, the Chaser offers the highest level of equipment with all the necessary attributes of expensive premium sedans.

In the sixth-generation Toyota Chaser model range, the previous engine line-up is used: it has replaced more than one generation and survived several modernizations of the Quartet: gasoline 4S-FE with a capacity of 120 hp and a 2L-TE turbodiesel (97 hp). Inline gasoline “sixes”, ideal for the Mark II / Chaser / Cresta family, are represented by engines of 2, 2.5 and 3 liters. In this generation, the 1JZ-GE and 2JZ-GE engines were the first to receive a variable valve timing system, and after restyling in 1998, it also acquired a two-liter 1G-FE, and its power was increased to 160 hp. At the same time, the manufacturer abandoned the diesel engine. In the transmission, as before, the main priority was given to the “automatic”, but for the most popular models, you could also choose the “mechanics” as an alternative, including the best representative of its class 1JZ-GTE with a capacity of 280 liters. with .. Well, a permanent four-wheel drive is provided not only for 2.5-liter versions, like the previous generation, but also in combination with a 2-liter engine, however, exclusively with automatic transmission.

Global changes in the design of the chassis did not happen, except for further modernization work. Front and rear - double wishbones, characterized by high comfort. It is worth noting, as before, good handling and at the same time sufficient carrying capacity without sacrificing driving performance. As in previous generations, the Tourer V modification has a modernized sports suspension with floating silent blocks of the upper arm, a lower stiffener, and increased brake calipers.

For security, Chaser has reached a whole new level, inaccessible to previous generations. Even in the basic configuration, the car regularly got both front airbags, belts with tension limiters, child seat mounts, and an ABS system (anti-lock braking system). After restyling, the Brake Assist auxiliary brake system was added. Traction control, side airbags have become options or standard in expensive trim levels, along with the VSC system.

Chaser in the 100th body - a great representative of the mid-size sports sedans. Of the total market supply, a very small group consists of models with engines standing at the extreme marks of the engine range - 1.8 and 3 liters. The real wealth of the assortment, offering the maximum choice, falls on the popular versions with 2.5-liter power units, a considerable part of which are the most technically interesting modifications to the Tourer V.
