The fourth generation Toyota Corolla came out in 1979. The latter with rear-wheel drive in all versions. This generation unites under one name a very extensive line of bodies: sedans, station wagons, 2-door Hardtop (sedan with a rigid roof and frameless doors) and 3-door liftback and coupe developed on its basis. If we take into account the classic sedan Corolla E70, then it was produced in 2- and 4-door versions. The standard four-door sedan received the most complete line of modifications, the most powerful of which was the sports model 1600 GT with a gasoline DOHC 1.6 2T-GEU, which developed 115 hp
A distinctive feature of early-release Corolla E70 sedans is the “four-eyed” front optics with round headlights, which at that time were considered already obsolete - in more advanced models, the Corolla Hardtop, Coupe and Liftback abandoned them in favor of rectangular ones. When creating the Corolla of this generation, more attention was paid to comfort: a carefully designed front seat design, the rear sofa provided increased comfort and safety thanks to a specially formed backrest with integrated head restraints; the car could be equipped with an analog or digital clock, air conditioning, electric side mirrors, remote opening of the trunk lock. With restyling in 1981, the appearance was slightly updated, all models received a single optics of square design, the interior and some equipment were modernized.

The Corolla Sedan E70 lineup (1979-1983) for the Japanese market includes several modifications. The low-cost versions were equipped with a carbureted 1.3-liter SOHC 4K-U series with a return of 72 hp, while the more powerful ones were equipped with a 1.5-liter 3A-U (80 hp). For some time (from August 1979 to August 1981), 1800 (TE70) models with a 1.8-liter 13T-U with a capacity of 95 liters were produced. with. A 1.6-liter 2T-GEU was installed on the top-end Corolla 1600 GT series - this unit had a DOHC type design and was equipped with an EFI injection system, delivering a maximum power of 115 hp. In February 1982, the Corolla sedan received a 1.8 liter diesel engine with a capacity of 1.8 hp and 64 hp. (1982-1983), which was in demand in the commercial sector. Depending on the modification, the sedan was equipped with a 4- or 5-speed manual gearbox, and the automatic transmission could be 3- or 2-speed (in earlier models). In 1982, a 4-speed “automatic” appeared for the first time, which made Corolla faster and more economical than previous automatic transmission models.

The entire Toyota Corolla E70 family has a MacPherson strut independent suspension (strut with spring). The rear dependent suspension became a spring 4-link type (in this generation, the exception was only the Corolla Van, where leaf springs were preserved). In steering, you can find both a somewhat outdated type of screw-ball nut design and a more modern rack-and-pinion mechanism, which, oddly enough, was used in low-cost models 1300, and later in 1500. Corolla has disc brakes at the front, drum brakes at the rear, but disc brakes at the 1600 GT models (based on the TE71 body) and rear brakes with anti-roll bars: the diameter of the front bar is 21 mm and the rear is 14 mm. If we talk about the external dimensions, then in a 4-door sedan they are: length 4050 mm (4225 mm - GT), width 1610 mm, height 1385 mm. The wheelbase is 2400 mm, the turning radius of this rear-wheel drive model is 4.7 meters. Interior dimensions: 1710 x 1330 x 1130 mm (L x W x H). The trunk has a volume of 250 liters, but it was not very convenient to use it because of the large loading height.

Noticeably increased attention to security in this generation. Visibility has been improved by reducing corners of the blind spots, child locks are installed in the rear doors. If the early models of the sedan in the front seats still used simple three-point belts that needed to be adjusted, then since 1981 all cars have received front seat belts with an inertial tensioner and a locking device. Halogen headlights appeared. Safer plastic bumpers offer improved energy absorption. The car successfully passed the necessary crash tests.

Corolla's “70th” series is truly rare and interesting. Few cars entered our country during the period when the right-hand drive second-hand began to import actively, and even more so few managed to survive all the hardships of harsh operation. Nevertheless, you can still find individual items that can be of collectible value, especially considering that we are talking about the "classic" era of Toyota Corolla.

This generation unites under one name a very extensive line of bodies: sedans, station wagons, 2-door Hardtop (sedan with a rigid roof and frameless doors) and 3-door liftback and coupe developed on its basis. If you take into account station wagons and vans of the Corolla Van family, they were produced in 3- and 5-door versions. The first models left the assembly line in August 1979 and were equipped with 1.3 liter (4K-J) and 1.6 liter (12T-J) SOHC gasoline engines.
A distinctive feature of the early-release Corolla Van E70 models is the “four-eyed” front optics with round headlights. These cars served primarily utilitarian purposes, so they did not claim a high level of comfort. Three versions were proposed: the basic Standard and slightly more saturated DX and GL. In the passenger compartment of these cars, one could see painted metal not covered with panels, in the most inexpensive version of the seat sheathed in leatherette, there was not even a heated rear window, and the radio was installed only for an additional fee, the radio and air conditioning were also options. The more expensive versions had a standard radio and rear window heater, a list of options was complemented by fabric upholstery, a rear wiper.  The Corolla Van E70 range (1979-1982) for the Japanese market includes several modifications. Inexpensive models were equipped with a carburetor 1.3-liter SOHC 4K-J series with a return of 69 hp, more powerful ones - a 1.6-liter 12T-J (86 hp). In February 1982, the Corolla Van, along with the DX and GL trim levels, received as an alternative a 1.8 liter 64-horsepower 1C (CE70) engine, which was in demand in the commercial sector. Depending on the modification, station wagons and vans were equipped with a 4- or 5-speed manual gearbox or a 3-speed automatic transmission.

The entire Toyota Corolla E70 family has a MacPherson strut independent suspension (strut with spring). In the rear suspension of Corolla Van, unlike other models, leaf springs have been preserved that increase the carrying capacity: you can take up to 400 kg of cargo with a driver and a passenger, in the version “driver + 4 passengers” - up to 250 kg. All “cargo passengers” had steering of the “screw-ball nut” type, although in this generation some models received a more modern rack and pinion mechanism. Front mounted disc brakes, rear drum brakes. If we talk about external dimensions, then they are: length 4105 mm, width 1610 mm, height 1390 mm. The wheelbase is 2400 mm, the turning radius of these rear-wheel drive models is 4.7 meters. The dimensions of the interior are almost the same as those of the Corolla E70 sedan, but the rear seats of the station wagon have flatter backs and are quite stiff. Great attention in this type of body deserves roominess. The depth of the trunk is 945 mm, and with the rear seatback folded down, 1535 mm. The trunk width was measured 1315 mm, height - 830 mm. The station wagon also has a small loading height - 560 mm from the level of the opening to the ground.  Noticeably increased attention to security in this generation. Visibility has been improved by reducing corners of the blind spots, child locks are installed in the rear doors. If in early models of station wagons in the front seats simple three-point belts were still used, which had to be adjusted, then since 1981 all cars have received front seat belts with an inertial tensioner and a locking device. This generation unites under one name a very extensive line of bodies: sedans, station wagons, 2-door Hardtop (sedan with a rigid roof and frameless doors) and liftback and coupe developed on its basis. If you take into account the model Corolla Liftback, then it was one of the three cars of the new series, which also included the Corolla Hardtop and Corolla Coupe. Young and active buyers should have been attracted by a stylish and energetic appearance, a reinforced body with frameless doors, improved aerodynamics and sound insulation. The most powerful sports model was the 1600 GT with a petrol DOHC 1.6 2T-GEU, which developed 115 hp.
When creating the Corolla of this generation, more attention was paid to comfort: a carefully designed front seat design, the rear sofa provided increased comfort and safety thanks to a specially formed backrest with integrated head restraints; Corolla Liftback is equipped with an analog or digital clock, air conditioning, electric side mirrors, remote trunk latch unlocking, rear wiper. Restyling in 1981 made cosmetic changes to the look of the Corolla Liftback (new radiator grille, headlights and dimensions), the power window drive mechanism was improved, the dashboard was modernized, etc.

The Corolla Liftback E70 range (1979-1983) for the Japanese market includes several modifications. The low-cost versions were equipped with a carburetor 1.3-liter SOHC 4K-U series with a return of 72 hp, more powerful ones - 1.5-liter 3A-U (80 liters. with.). For some time (from August 1979 to August 1981), 1800 (TE70) models were produced with a 1.8-liter 13T-U rated at 95 hp. The wheelbase is 2400 mm, the turning radius of this rear-wheel drive model is 4.7 meters. Interior dimensions: 1635 x 1345 x 1070 mm (L x W x H). Like any liftback, this model has a quite roomy trunk, but it was not very convenient to use it because of the large loading height. The back of the rear sofa folds in parts, forming a flat cargo area.

Noticeably increased attention to security in this generation. Improved visibility by reducing the blind corners. All Corolla Liftback models had front three-point seat belts with an inertial tensioner and a locking device. In 1981, halogen headlights appeared. If we take into account the classic Corolla E70 sedan, then in addition to the standard 4-door model, a 2-door version was also produced. This car has frame doors, but oversized to simplify access to the back row. There is only one modification - 1300 with a 72 hp gasoline engine
It should be noted that this type of bodywork - a two-door sedan that formally claims the role of a coupe - was a landmark for Toyota Corolla. In fact, with a similar model, the debut of the first generation (E10) took place in 1966. But in the late 70s, interest in them began to decline, and for Corolla Sedan 2Door, the manufacturer offered a stripped-down set of trim levels, which includes the basic version of Standard and slightly more saturated DX and GL. Inside the cars, you could see painted metal that was not covered by panels, the most inexpensive version of the seat was lined with faux leather, there wasn’t even heated rear window, and the radio was installed only for an additional fee, the radio and air conditioning were also options. The more expensive versions had a standard radio and rear window defroster, and the seat upholstery complemented the list of options. With restyling in 1981, the appearance was slightly updated, all models received a single optics of square design.

The two-door Corolla Sedan E70 (1979-1983) for the Japanese market was equipped with a carburetor 1.3-liter SOHC 4K-U series with a maximum power of 72 hp. Depending on the configuration, the 2-door sedan was equipped with a 4- or 5-speed manual gearbox, and the automatic transmission in this type of body was only 2-speed (in earlier models that were produced before August 1981). The entire Toyota Corolla E70 family has a MacPherson strut independent suspension (strut with spring). The rear dependent suspension became a spring 4-link type (in this generation, the exception was only the Corolla Van, where leaf springs were preserved). In combination with the 4K-U engine, the Corolla E70 two-door sedan was equipped with a rack and pinion steering gear; front mounted disc brakes, rear drum. If we talk about the external dimensions, then in a 2-door sedan they are: length 4050 mm, width 1610 mm, height 1385 mm.
