Wagon
The fourth generation Toyota Corolla under the designation E70 came out in 1979. The latter with rear-wheel drive in all versions. This generation unites under one name a very extensive line of bodies. In the commercial sector and for family use, vans and station wagons were very popular. In 1982, these models received a number of changes and even replenished with a more comfortable passenger version of the Corolla Wagon. With the advent of the new generation E80 in 1983, the production of 70 Series sedans was discontinued, as well as a two-door hardtop, a three-door liftback and a coupe. But rear-wheel drive vans and station wagons continued to be produced until 1987.
Corolla Van and Wagon models have the letter V or G in the body index, respectively. The Corolla Van had three trim levels: the basic Standard and slightly richer DX and GL. Corolla Wagon: DX and GL. Inside the cars, you could see painted metal that was not covered by panels, the most inexpensive version of the seat was lined with faux leather, there wasn’t even heated rear window, and the radio was installed only for an additional fee, the radio and air conditioning were also options. The more expensive versions had a standard radio and rear window heater, a list of options was complemented by fabric upholstery, a rear wiper. In August 1983, modernization took place: the design of the hood, fenders, optics, dashboard and instrument cluster was changed.

The lineup of Corolla Van and Wagon E70 (1982-1987) for the Japanese market includes several modifications. The low-cost Corolla Van was equipped with a modernized carburetor 1.3-liter SOHC 4K-J series with 72 hp, the 1.6-liter 12T-J (86 hp) continued to be installed on more powerful ones, and since 1983 - the new 5KJ engine (1.5 L, 83 L with.). The 1.3-liter 4K-U (KE73G) unit, inherited from the sedan, was installed on the new Corolla Wagon model. She also received a 1.8-liter diesel engine (CE72G), which Corolla Van already had. Depending on the modification, station wagons and vans of this generation were equipped with a 4- or 5-speed manual gearbox or a 3-speed automatic transmission. The next modernization took place in 1985, the diesel engine was improved, individual versions of the Corolla Van received a 4-band “automatic”, which made them faster and more economical than previous models with automatic transmission. The entire Toyota Corolla E70 family has a MacPherson strut independent suspension (strut with spring). In the rear suspension of station wagons and vans, leaf springs are used that increase the carrying capacity: with a driver and a passenger, you can take up to 400 kg of cargo on board, in the “driver + 4 passenger” version, up to 250 kg. Corolla Van models had screw-ball-nut steering, while the Corolla Wagon with a 4K-U engine used a rack and pinion mechanism. Front mounted disc brakes, rear drum brakes. If we talk about external dimensions, then they are: length 4105 mm, width 1610 mm, height 1390 mm. The wheelbase is 2400 mm, the turning radius of these rear-wheel drive models is 4.7 meters. The dimensions of the interior are almost the same as those of the Corolla E70 sedan, but the rear seats of the station wagon have flatter backs and are quite stiff. In 1985, more comfortable seats appeared in the DX and GL trim levels. Great attention in this type of body deserves roominess. For example, in models of a Long Deck van with one row of seats, the length of the cargo area reached 1540 mm, the width was 1315 mm, and the height was 830 mm. The station wagon also has a small loading height - 560 mm from the level of the opening to the ground.

Noticeably increased attention to security in this generation. Visibility has been improved by reducing corners of the blind spots, child locks are installed in the rear doors. If in early models of station wagons in the front seats simple three-point belts were still used, which had to be adjusted, then since 1981 all cars have received front seat belts with an inertial tensioner and a locking device. Halogen headlights appeared. Safer plastic bumpers offer improved energy absorption. The car successfully passed the necessary crash tests. Corolla's “70th” series is truly rare and interesting. Few cars entered our country during the period when the right-hand drive second-hand began to import actively, and even more so few managed to survive all the hardships of harsh operation. Nevertheless, you can still find individual items that can be of collectible value, especially considering that we are talking about the "classic" era of Toyota Corolla.
