Toyota Crown is one of the most luxurious cars designed for the Japanese domestic market. The first copies of the eleventh generation (170th body) came off the assembly line in September 1999. Compared with its predecessor, the new Crown has added a few centimeters in width and length, has become a little higher, thereby increasing the interior space of the cabin. Changes also affected the layout of the engine compartment, the front overhang became shorter, although the wheelbase did not change. The fuel tank shifted to the center, which freed up additional space for the trunk. From a design point of view, the model largely retained the features of the previous generation, but received smoother body lines. The release of a hardtop that did not meet modern security requirements had to be abandoned.
On the other hand, Crown is now presented with different modifications: Royal and Athlete, each with its own set of trim levels. The 130th body was already equipped with the same name, but now it has been put forward for a separate level of equipment. If Crown Royal is a “classic of the genre”, then Athlete is the same Crown, but with a sporty character. Accordingly, there are other suspension settings, another (5-speed) automatic transmission, less ground clearance. Outward differences are also striking - in optics, bumpers, radiator grille, and pattern of alloy wheels. Both versions provide a very wide range of equipment both in the basic configuration and as additional options. The Athlete modification formed the basis for the creation of the Crown Estate station wagon (the previous Crown Wagon station wagon was hopelessly out of date in its 11th year in its 130th body). Four round headlights, a mesh radiator grill, a tuning suspension went to the new model from a sports modification, however, like the rest of the accessories: a leather steering wheel, special seats, xenon headlights. Toyota Crown in the 170th body was equipped with several types of engines. As the basic power unit for the Royal complete sets and Estate Athlete E-type station wagon, a two-liter 1G-FE with a power of 160 hp was used. Higher grade packages were equipped with 2.5- and 3.0-liter JZ engines. They were also installed on the Crown Athlete, with the base being a 2.5-liter 196 hp and the Athlete V versions equipped with a turbocharged 1JZ-GTE with a capacity of 280 liters. with. For the Royal Royal, the “mild hybrid” option was also proposed - a three-liter 2JZ-FSE combined with an electric motor. The power of such a power plant is 200 hp.

Toyota Crown suspension provides an exceptional level of comfort, but it lacks some stiffness, which is why on our roads, where the driver often requires active steering, the smoothness and grandeur of the Crown turns into a swath and poor handling. That is why the more "assembled" version of Athlete is in great demand. Some Crown configurations came in four-wheel drive versions: 4WD FullTime with an asymmetrical center differential and a hydromechanical lock-up clutch. Expensive configurations were equipped with air bags instead of springs.

NASVA twice conducted a crash test of this generation Toyota Crown - in 1999 and in 2001. The car demonstrated the integrity of the body in frontal impacts with full overlap and lateral displacement. In the latter case, the only comments were made for the deformation of the feet of the driver and passenger, despite the fact that in general the position of the mannequins after the collision was fully preserved. An excellent result was demonstrated with a side impact, while even the possibility of opening both doors was preserved. Note that the equipment of Toyota Crown includes front airbags, side airbags (optional), from active systems: TCS (traction control), BAS (auxiliary braking), VSC (traffic stabilization).

Ease of driving, the lack of a feeling of fatigue on the road, a comfortable driver's seat are, of course, the characteristic features of Toyota Crown. This generation, in essence, embodies a fusion of the best engineering ideas of the 90s of the last century and occupies an intermediate niche between more modern models that were put into operation after the Zero Crown concept car demonstration and outdated models of previous generations.
Toyota Crown Sedan is actually a luxury version of Toyota Crown Comfort, presented to the public in 2001. In fact, the model replaced the Toyota Crown sedan in the 150th body when it was discontinued the same year. First, it is worth noting that the creation of Crown Comfort in the back of the XS10 (1995) was dictated by the desire to return to the original purpose of Crown: to serve as a taxi. The Comfort model has become a little smaller in size, but more spacious and with a higher roof than the classic Crown. To reduce unnecessary costs and weight and increase the interior space, less voluminous interior panels, simple seats, a less luxurious dashboard, etc. were used. However, Crown Sedan, despite being built on the basis of Crown Comfort, has the best quality trim: a chic, interesting front panel, an abundance of velor, wood-like finish. Outside - more impressive bumpers, wide taillights, side mirrors in the front doors, although on some versions they are also placed on the wings. The standard equipment of the Crown Sedan (standard Super Deluxe) includes front fog lights, glazings with UV protection, electric side mirrors and a driver's seat, which has a comfortable backrest that prevents the development of fatigue, and the seat position can be precisely adjusted for a specific user. You can also note the presence of additional drawers, cup holders, a climate system with an air purifier. In a more chic Super Saloon configuration, the back of the front passenger seat has a hatch that leans back and turns into a comfortable ottoman, onto which the rear passenger can hoist his tired legs. All modern configurations are equipped with a start-stop system that automatically muffles and starts the engine when the car is idle at traffic lights or in traffic jams.

Compared to Crown Comfort, the Crown Sedan model uses a wider range of engines, including not only LPG engines using liquefied petroleum gas, but also a traditional gasoline power unit, as well as a hybrid installation. 79 hp 4-cylinder 3Y-PE engine adapted for gas set to 2008. Its advantages include a timing chain drive and a fairly decent torque with a relatively low power (160 Nm). Since 2008, it was replaced on the conveyor by another gas “four” 1TR-FPE with a VVT system (113 hp and 186 Nm). Another LPG engine, a six-cylinder in-line 12-valve 1G-GPE with a capacity of 110 liters. with. put on the Crown Sedan from 2001 to 2004. At the same time, a more modern 24-valve gasoline engine of the same series was used - 1G-FE (160 hp, 200 Nm), which has become classic for many generations of the “E” class (Mark II, Crown family). It is also used in models with a hybrid layout of the power unit, however, as a result of such hybridization, the total power dropped to 143 “horses”.

The Crown Sedan pendant is identical to that of Crown Comfort. Front and rear - suspension struts with coil springs; MacPherson in front, continuous bridge in the back. This design is quite advisable in terms of simplicity and reliability, convenience and low cost of maintenance, good controllability. The minimum turning radius of the Crown Sedan is 5 m. The gearbox on all versions is automatic, 4-speed, with power steering and an integrated flexible locking system depending on the traffic situation, which provides additional fuel economy. The Crown Sedan uses a GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) type body structure, which minimizes deformation of the interior, protected by a powerful frame to ensure the integrity of the space in which the driver and passengers are located. On a crash test with lateral displacement, the car showed an excellent result. True, the database relies only on a driver's airbag. But of the active systems, in addition to ABS and an auxiliary braking system, the standard equipment from 2013 on all versions are VSC and TRC systems, which provide stability control and stabilize the car. Externally, Crown Sedan resembles cars of the 80s. This is a typical classic rear-wheel drive car, which is notable for its low cost in its homeland. A comfortable spacious interior, decent reliability, unpretentiousness and nothing extra in equipment - its main and undeniable advantages.
