Station wagon Toyota Mark II Wagon Qualis in 1997 replaced the Toyota Mark II Wagon, which appeared on the market back in 1984 and was morally obsolete by that time. However, the Mark II Wagon Qualis is built on a completely different platform than the traditional Mark II, and is not an actual continuation of the series. This front-wheel drive car with a transverse engine is in fact a representative of the 20-body Windom / Camry / Gracia family, designed primarily for the North American market. It is worth noting that the front of the car is almost the same as that of the Toyota Mark II, but the body resembles the silhouette of a Toyota Camry Gracia.
 The Mark II Wagon Qualis is an L-Class front-wheel drive station wagon. In other words, the car can be attributed to high-end cars. The simplest options offered were full power accessories, power steering, an electric driver’s seat, front fog lights, a roof spoiler, air conditioning, wood trim, a cassette player, 15 ”aluminum wheels. As an option - navigation system, sunroof, rear fog lights, cruise control. All this is the standard for more expensive trim levels, including the most chic Qualis G, which cost over 3 million yen. At the end of 1999, the model underwent restyling, respectively, having received a higher level of equipment of the basic models, and in the more expensive ones there were numerous electronic systems, elements of a sports style (Tourer), a smart multimedia system with a full-color display and six speakers. Given the initially front-wheel drive nature of the car, it is understandable that there is a serious discrepancy in powertrains with the traditional Mark II family, for which the main engines are in-line Sixes. The Mark II Wagon Qualis has engines similar to the Camry Gracia. The base 2.2-liter 4-cylinder inline 5S-FE has 140 hp. In addition to it, two V-shaped “sixes” were offered: a 2MZ-FE engine with a volume of 2.5 liters and a capacity of 200 liters. with., as well as a 3-liter 1MZ-FE with 210 hp (215 hp - 1999 modification). These motors, even if they can’t boast the velvet-sounding velvet sound of a real in-line Six, but they certainly deserve interest and high marks.

 Suspension Toyota Mark II Wagon Qualis corresponds to the standard design of passenger front-wheel drive cars: independent, struts with coil springs front and rear. The suspension is quite soft, but prone to large moves and buildup. Therefore, with the installation of Qualis Electronic Suspension Control System (TEMS), the handling and driving performance of this car are significantly improved. Transmission to the car was offered only automatic, four-speed. The all-wheel drive system is of the V-Flex type: without an interaxle differential, the rear wheels are connected with a viscous coupling, one of the shortcomings is the impossibility of complete blocking and delayed “seizure” during active driving, and in principle, aggressive behavior is contraindicated in this system. The set of security systems significantly exceeds all that could be expected from the previous station wagon. Here, the Mark II Wagon Qualis demonstrates the highest class. Even in the basic configuration, the car has two front airbags, three-point belts for all seats, front seat belts with pretensioners, amplifiers in the doors, and an ABS system. In vehicles with maximum equipment, there are side airbags, an auxiliary braking system, traction control, belt force limiters. You can be ironic as much as you like, “real” is Mark II or “fake”, but Qualis, who is directly related to Toyota Camry Gracia, has completely fulfilled its task, becoming an intermediate link between the hopelessly outdated station wagon Mark II Wagon and the new Mark II Blit, who replaced him in 2002. Well, and since the car was originally designed not as a sport, but as a family, the debate about the need to use front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive as the main one is not so fundamental. It is more important to note the spaciousness of the cabin and the excellent performance of the luggage compartment, as well as the luxury of expensive versions, which is quite consistent with the Mark II family cars.
