Sedan
The fourth-generation Toyota Vista sedan (V40) was restyled in June 1996, simultaneously with the Camry in the same body. The car received a “crystal” optics, a new design radiator grille and a number of other minor changes. Due to the fact that ABS and two pillows became standard for all models, increased safety. As before, Vista V40 was offered in two versions of a four-door body: a regular family type sedan (it received the designation alpha), as well as a stylish version of a hardtop sedan (with doors without frames), which is available starting from the second generations. After restyling, the aggregate line of Toyota Vista (V40) 1996-1998 has not changed: gasoline (125-140 hp) and diesel (88-91 hp) inline fours combined with a manual or automatic transmission. Traditionally for the domestic market, there were some modifications with all-wheel drive.
Toyota Vista is an ideal family car, with excellent comfort and equipment, while the hardtop body makes the model more elegant. A wide range of equipment options can satisfy the needs of different customers - this rule has been preserved for Vista Hardtop even after restyling. Already in the initial configuration, the VJ sedan will offer front fog lights, a vertically adjustable steering wheel, power windows, automatic air conditioning, and for an extra fee - leather steering wheel braid, wood-like interior trim. The top-of-the-range VX equipment includes electric front seats, a remote key, a sound system with high-quality sound, a sunroof and other equipment. A Sporting-style Touring was also offered. Especially for Vista Hardtop special series were released. For example, Etoile V (December 1996) includes a remote key, high-quality fabric upholstery, a folding back seat, etc. e. Options VJ Saloon (December 1997) added electrically folding mirrors, wood-like inserts to standard equipment.

The motor range of Toyota Vista Hardtop (V40) 1996-1998 engines remains virtually unchanged. The basis is S series gasoline engines, which have proven their reliability and unpretentiousness. This is a 1.8-liter 125-horsepower 4S-FE as the base powertrain. As well as the 2.0-liter 3S-FE with 140 hp. The latter is considered the most popular in the series and the most optimal in terms of performance, in addition, modifications with this motor included not only front-wheel drive, but also all-wheel drive. A Toyota Vista sedan with a diesel engine was also offered. They became a 3C-T turbodiesel with a capacity of 91 hp. - This motor was combined with both mechanical and automatic transmission (however, like gasoline units). It was provided for the diesel and four-wheel drive modification (88 hp) with automatic transmission.

The suspension of Toyota Vista (V40) 1996-1998 remains unchanged. Independent, spring, MacPherson type front and rear. As an option, the 4WS (4 Wheel Steering) system, which provides maneuvering the vehicle with all four wheels, was still offered. This improves handling, but at the same time complicates the maintenance and repair of the suspension. Dimensional performance of Toyota Vista Hardtop is optimal both in terms of roominess (interior dimensions 1990 x 1450 x 1175 mm) and dimensions: the length of the car is 4650 (25 mm longer than the Vista Sedan), width and height - 1695 and 1410 mm . The wheelbase is 2650 mm, the minimum turning radius is 5.4 m. The deep trunk has a decent volume, which can be further increased by a folding rear seat.

After the restyling of 1996, all versions of the Toyota Vista V40 are equipped as standard with two front airbags (for driver and passenger), anti-lock braking system. Since the model was released in 1994, the TRC traction control system was available as an option for individual trim levels. High passive safety is confirmed by successful results in crash tests.

Toyota Vista V40 is an excellent representative of the Japanese automobile industry of the 90s, which has incorporated all the best practices of Toyota. But the production of the model and its restyling (by the way, very insignificant) fell during the collapse of the “soap bubble” in the economy, so the company was forced to cut costs. The line of complete sets does not offer such a separation between simple and chic versions, as was typical for previous series. External and internal equipment has become more practical. Nevertheless, a high level of comfort, the quality of finishing materials, and good equipment remain decisive for this model. Owners of Toyota Vista of this generation do not have special problems with spare parts and service. It is worth noting that the next generation Vista V50 is already a model independent from Toyota Camry.
